The History of the Slurpee

Many think the first Slurpees were enjoyed during the Ice Age by entrepreneurial Neanderthals. However in reality it took a clever man and an even cleverer machine to make the first frozen beverage. According to the ever reliable Wikipedia frozen drinks were invented by Omar Knedlik in the late 1950s. The idea for a slushed drink came when Knedlik's soda fountain broke down, forcing him to put his sodas in a freezer to stay cool, which caused them to become Slurpee-like. Many people loved them, which gave him the idea to make a machine to help make a ‘Slurpee-like drink’.

In the 1960s 7-Eleven ditched flower power for frozen power and began selling the Slurpee product in the U.S. In 1967 the product became officially known as the "Slurpee" (for the sound made when drinking them). The term was coined by Bob Stanford, a 7-Eleven agency director.
